Root Canal Treatment
Root canal treatment is used to save a tooth with an infected or dead pulp and prevent the infection from spreading. A root canal saves the affected tooth by cleaning out the diseased pulp and reshaping the canal.
Pulp exists inside each tooth, providing the tooth with nerves and nutrients. The pulp tissue can sometimes die if it is damaged or diseased. Once the nerve and pulp are removed, the root canal is cleaned and sealed for protection. A crown is then placed over the tooth to increase its strength.In the past, teeth with damaged pulps were removed. Today, root canal treatment has provided dentists with a safe solution for saving the tooth and maintaining your natural smile.
Root Canal Therapy (RCT)
Keeping your root canals healthy is just as important as keeping your teeth’s surfaces and gums healthy. Just like a tooth can develop a cavity, a root canal can become infected and require treatment called root canal therapy (RCT).
During root canal therapy, your dentist will clean and seal the entire root canal to prevent future infections in the nerve tissue or pulp. When this infected tissue or pulp is not treated, it breaks down and bacteria can cause an abscess, or infection of the mouth, face, jaw, or throat. However, with a simple root canal, you can prevent an abscess from developing.

Common Symptoms of a Root Canal Infection
When natural teeth fall out or are compromised, the damage goes well below the surface of the tooth and even the gum line. When the roots are lost due to missing teeth, the bone that once supported and surrounded those roots starts to deteriorate. This is called bone resorption. When bone resorption occurs, it causes the face to collapse into the mouth. The entire facial structure is compromised, and drastic changes in appearance occur; the lips fold in and the lower face shrivels up to create a witch-like chin and deep contours around the mouth create “marionette lines.” These changes are so severe they can make a person look twenty years older than they actually are.
