What Types of Dental Crowns/Tooth Caps Are Available?

Temporary dental crowns are acrylic or metal alloy and are made right in your dentist’s office. It will cover the tooth while your permanent crown is being created in our in-house dental lab. Stainless steel dental crowns are prefabricated crowns that are used on permanent and baby teeth.

Stainless steel crowns are generally used for children's teeth because they are cost-effective and are completed in one visit. Metal dental crowns can be made from cast gold alloys or cast silver palladium alloys. With a metal crown, less tooth structure needs to be removed before installation and the wear on opposing teeth is minimal.

Metal crowns withstand biting and chewing well and rarely chip or break. Porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns contain an inner metal casting with porcelain baked over it. They look natural and blend in with surrounding teeth, but occasionally may chip and show the underlying metal.

Dental Crown Treatment Procedure

A dental crown usually requires two visits to the dentist. At the first appointment:

• Our dentist will examine the tooth. The examination is needed to ensure that your tooth can support a crown. Your dentist may begin filing it down to prepare for the crown at your first appointment
• Alternatively, if the tooth is severely damaged or broken, your dentist may need to fill it in to make it large enough to properly receive the crown.
• After the tooth is filed or filled to the proper shape, your dentist may take an impression of the tooth, as well as those surrounding it. The impression is normally sent away to a dental lab, so the permanent crown can be made..
• By the end of this first visit, your tooth may have a temporary crown that protects it until the final crown is ready to be permanently placed on the treated tooth.
• When the permanent crown is ready, you may have your second visit. At your second appointment, your smile.com.au approved dentist may remove the temporary crown and position and fasten the new permanent crown to the treated tooth with a special adhesive.
• Your dental crown may take some getting used to, but in time a permanent dental crown should look, function, and feel like a regular tooth.

What are the Different Types of Dental Bridges Available?

Traditional Bridges

Cantilever Bridges

Used when there are adjacent teeth on one side only of the missing tooth or teeth, a cantilever bridge is best suited for use in the back of the mouth where it can't place much force on other teeth and damage them.

Resin-Bonded Bridges or Maryland Bridges

Resin-bonded bridges, also known as Maryland bridges, are made of porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or plastic teeth and gums supported by a metal or porcelain framework. Metal or porcelain wings protruding from one side of the bridge are bonded to your existing teeth.

Dental Bridge Treatment Procedure

• Our dentist will prepare the teeth adjacent to the gap for treatment, reshaping them to allow room for the bridge to be placed over them.
• Impressions of your teeth will be made and sent to a dental lab to serve as a model for your dental bridge to ensure a proper fit and color match.

• You may be required to visit several times to check the fit and bite. .
• If your dental bridge is a fixed bridge, it may be put in place temporarily to ensure it is a proper fit and then cemented after this trial period.
